Infantry speed +10%; Spy speed +2% instead, if the "Knowlton's Continental Rangers" card is sent

Effect

The normal effect applies to Infantry movement, not attack speed or damage. With the Knowlton’s Continental Rangers card, the documented speed effect instead applies to Spies, so card state changes who benefits.

Research condition

Available in the Commerce Age at Arsenal. Research time: 30 seconds. Cost: 150 wood, 150 coin. Civilization-specific building access can vary.

Research decision

Research before a planned rotation, pursuit or withdrawal when the affected infantry will move together over distance. Check the Knowlton’s Continental Rangers interaction if using that card, and weigh the upgrade against immediate army costs.

Infantry movement and card interaction

The Commerce Age Arsenal upgrade raises Infantry movement speed by 10%, helping a foot army rotate, pursue, or withdraw. It does not increase attack speed or damage. With Knowlton's Continental Rangers, the recorded movement benefit instead applies to Spies, so check the card interaction before researching. The upgrade is most useful when several affected units will move across the map together, and less valuable when the army is stationary or resources are needed for immediate production.

Movement speed, not combat output

Military Drummers increases Infantry movement speed by 10%; it does not raise attack rate, damage or hit points. The practical gain is in travel and positioning: a foot army can arrive sooner, follow a retreat more effectively or move between a defended point and a threatened resource. The technology does not make Infantry resistant to Cavalry or artillery, and a faster march is not a reason to outrun the units that protect the group. Keep the force together when the engagement depends on its frontline and ranged support arriving at the same time.

Check the Knowlton’s Continental Rangers interaction

The normal effect applies to Infantry, but with the United States Knowlton’s Continental Rangers card the documented speed effect instead applies to Spies. That card changes which units benefit, so verify the card and unit state before relying on the upgrade to accelerate an Infantry army. Military Drummers is an Arsenal research choice: compare its movement benefit with the resources and research time shown in the match, and choose it when the force will make useful rotations after completion. The speed bonus supports the army’s route; it does not replace scouting, a safe retreat path or a plan for the next engagement.
