Shock Troops

Shock Troops is the current in-game name for the Age of Empires III combat class previously called Shock Infantry. The class covers infantry that fills cavalry-like battlefield roles, so its armor tags and counter relationships differ from ordinary Heavy Infantry or Light Infantry. The name changed in Definitive Edition Update 19.18309; earlier guides and older article titles may still use Shock Infantry.

Current name & version

The class is divided into Hand Shock Troops and Ranged Shock Troops. Hand Shock Troops function as a fast melee substitute for hand cavalry and are vulnerable to the relevant anti-cavalry attacks, including Light Ranged Cavalry and Heavy Infantry. Ranged Shock Troops take a light-cavalry-like role and are countered by Light Infantry; their matchups should not be read as if they were ordinary Foot Archers. Unit tags, not visual appearance alone, determine which multipliers apply. The class has expanded across releases, and individual units can carry additional tags.

Class subdivisions & counters

Identify the exact shock subtype in the unit’s current stat panel before selecting a counter. Use Heavy Infantry or Light Ranged Cavalry against Hand Shock Troops, and Light Infantry against Ranged Shock Troops; then check the target’s other tags and civilization upgrades. When reading older strategy material, translate “Shock Infantry” to the current “Shock Troops” label but retain the guide’s release context, since unit rosters and counter multipliers have changed over time.

Identify the subtype before choosing a counter

Hand Shock Troops act as fast melee units and are checked by anti-cavalry tools such as Heavy Infantry and Light Ranged Cavalry. Ranged Shock Troops occupy a different role and are countered by Light Infantry. The shared class name does not make their damage and defenses identical, so inspect the exact unit tags and its individual attack multipliers before committing an army.

A terminology change with matchup consequences

Definitive Edition Update 19.18309 changed the class label from Shock Infantry to Shock Troops. Older articles and guides may retain the former name. When comparing advice across versions, translate the name but also check the unit’s release and current tags: the category has expanded over time, and some units carry additional tags that make them vulnerable to more than one counter class.
