Capacity and organization
A Storage Unit expands and organizes a player’s CS2 Inventory. Each unit adds a capacity of 1,000 items, so it is useful when the main inventory is full or when the player wants a labeled collection for a particular theme. Players can create separate groups for tournament items, weapon finishes, stickers or other eligible collectibles, while keeping frequently used items easier to find in the main inventory. The unit stores existing items; it does not generate a drop, duplicate an item or grant extra weapons during a match.
Storage Units can be named with a label, and the label can be changed repeatedly without using a Name Tag. A useful label describes the collection inside, but the label does not change the stored items or make them searchable as a separate gameplay loadout. Inventory covers the broader collection and equipment selection.
Depositing items
There are two common ways to deposit items. From an eligible item in the CS2 Inventory, choose the move-to-Storage-Unit action and select a destination unit. Alternatively, open a Storage Unit, choose Deposit Items and select the items to move. The updated interface supports selecting multiple eligible items for a deposit flow, which is more practical for sorting a large collection than handling each object in isolation.
Some items are not eligible for storage. Steam Support specifically lists default weapons, Agents, Gloves and Music Kits as excluded. The Storage Unit is for inventory objects that can be moved into its holding space, not every visible object in the player’s account. If an item is absent from the selection list, check its item type and current CS2 eligibility rather than assuming the unit is full.
Retrieving and using stored items
To use an item, retrieve it from the unit. Open the Storage Unit and choose Retrieve Items, or inspect its contents and select one or more items to return. A retrieved item goes back to its prior location in the CS2 Inventory rather than automatically appearing at the top, so use the inventory search or scroll to that position if it is not immediately visible. Depositing and retrieving do not make the item leave the account.
While an item is in a Storage Unit, it is locked from normal item actions: it cannot be equipped, consumed, traded, listed on the Steam Community Market, renamed or altered. That means a stored weapon finish cannot be put in a loadout, a stored sticker cannot be applied, and an eligible item cannot be submitted to a Trade Up Contract until it has been retrieved. The unit is an organizational container, not a parallel active inventory.
Acquiring a Storage Unit
Storage Units are purchased through the in-game store. Steam Support lists the US price as $1.99; the store may display a local currency equivalent in another region. Store pricing and interface details can change, so check the current CS2 store before purchase. A unit can be useful for organization even before the main inventory reaches its limit, because it creates another labeled place to sort eligible items.
The Storage Unit itself has its own item properties, while the items placed inside it remain their original inventory objects. Other Storage Units cannot be deposited into a Storage Unit. Do not treat storage as a way to transfer, trade or hide an item from account-level ownership; it simply changes where the item is organized in the CS2 inventory interface.
Restrictions, deletion and common confusion
An item in storage remains owned by the same account but is unavailable for direct action until retrieved. It will not appear in the Steam Community Inventory display while stored. If a retrieved item seems to be missing, search the CS2 Inventory or inspect the location it occupied before being deposited; retrieval does not imply that the item was lost or moved to a new account.
An empty Storage Unit can be deleted from the in-game inventory. The purchase price is not refunded when it is deleted. A unit containing items must be emptied first, so retrieve the contents and confirm where they return before removing the container. If several units have similar labels, inspect each one before deletion to avoid confusing an empty unit with one that still holds items.
CS2 applicability and dated history
Storage Units were introduced to Counter-Strike in November 2019 and remain part of Counter-Strike 2’s inventory system. The relevant rules for this entry are the current CS2 capacity, deposit and retrieval behavior, item restrictions, renaming and empty-unit deletion; older interface screenshots are not instructions for the current client.
The feature’s history includes batch selection improvements in November 2019 and an updated retrieval/deposit/inspection interface plus empty-unit deletion in October 2022. This dated history explains why older descriptions may say that units could not be deleted or that each item had to be moved separately. Current Steam Support guidance is the applicable reference for CS2 item restrictions and behavior. Related systems include Inventory, Weapon Skins, Souvenir Packages, Stickers and Trade Up Contract.
Deleting empty labeled Storage Units (April 16, 2024)
The April 16, 2024 update allowed players to delete empty Storage Units that had an assigned label. This resolves a lifecycle case for containers that were empty but still labeled; the change does not state that a Storage Unit with items can be deleted or that labels on populated units can be removed. The release notes provide no additional confirmation or recovery behavior.
