Weapon identity and history
The G3SG1 is a Terrorist-side automatic sniper rifle. Its alternate historical designation is D3/AU-1; “SG” refers to the German Scharfschützengewehr, or sharpshooting rifle. The real G3SG/1 is an accurized Heckler & Koch G3 variant. In Counter-Strike 2, the rifle keeps automatic fire, a high-power scope and a very high purchase price, making it a specialized choice rather than an ordinary replacement for the AK-47. The Counter-Terrorist counterpart is the SCAR-20.
Its 80 body damage means a full-health player can be eliminated in two body hits, while a headshot is lethal according to the recorded hitbox values. The head row is above 100 because the table records raw hitbox damage before the lethal result is applied. Armor reduces body and head damage, but the rifle’s 82.5% armor penetration keeps it effective against protected targets. A leg hit does 59 in either armor column and is a weaker option than a controlled upper-body shot.
Automatic fire and scope controls
Unlike the bolt-action AWP and SSG 08, the G3SG1 fires another shot without a bolt cycle. Holding the fire button produces repeated automatic shots at 240 rounds per minute. This can maintain pressure on a lane or punish a predictable crossing, but the high rate of follow-up fire does not make every shot accurate. Strong recoil, a 20-round magazine and the need to place each scoped shot still reward controlled timing.
Secondary fire activates the high-power scope; a further press changes to a higher magnification. Pressing it again at the higher zoom or changing weapons exits the scoped state. The unscoped view has no crosshair and is very inaccurate, so the rifle is best prepared on a sightline rather than drawn after an opponent is already close. Scoped movement is markedly slower: the CS2 record lists 120 units per second running scoped, compared with 215 unscoped. Reposition while unscoped where possible, then establish the angle again.
Team role, economy and limitations
At $5,000, the G3SG1 is the most expensive Terrorist rifle option described on the page and commits a large share of a player’s funds. Its $300 kill reward in the listed rules does not erase that initial cost. Before buying it, consider whether the team can still afford armor, utility and rifles for teammates. It is more plausible when the economy can support the purchase and the player has a useful lane to hold; a rushed purchase may leave the rest of the side under-equipped.
The weapon works best when its player can anchor a long angle, cover a flank or punish repeated movement through a crossing. Teammates can use Smoke Grenade and Flashbang utility to shape what the scoped player can see, while the sniper communicates any rotation or loss of the lane. Its slow scoped movement and 4.7-second reload make a close retake or exposed ammunition change risky. Reload behind cover and remember that the magazine holds only 20 rounds.
The AWP delivers much greater single-shot damage and is commonly preferred when the team wants a sniper rifle that can eliminate with one body shot, but it is bolt-action and has different handling. The G3SG1 offers repeated shots instead. Compare it with the Counter-Terrorist SCAR-20, the AWP and the lighter SSG 08; their prices, firing actions and team restrictions create different roles.
CS2 version notes
The source’s hitbox and movement tables are presented for the CS2-era weapon record; earlier-edition figures and tactics are not treated as current CS2 facts. The CS2 update history records a November 4, 2025 fix to the G3SG1 bolt animation. It is a visual/animation note and does not change the damage, magazine, price or reload values listed here.
Counter-Strike 2’s March 18, 2026 reload refactor applies to magazine-fed weapons: a completed reload discards remaining rounds and uses a full magazine from reserve. The G3SG1’s 20-round magazine makes an early reload a meaningful choice. The game now shows reserve ammunition as magazines where appropriate and shows the loaded magazine’s fill level.
Appearance improvement (June 9, 2023)
The June 9, 2023 Limited Test patch listed the G3SG1 among weapons with an improved look. The visual adjustment was not described, and no balance or handling change is stated.
