History of the Augurs
This book traces the order of the Augurs, Rome's highest priests, whom it calls older than Rome itself — Rome lasted over a thousand years, the order longer still. Their art of divining the gods' desires and decrees was an Etruscan invention, whose own origins remain disputed: some say Italy was always their home, others that they came after the fall of Troy, still others that they descend from noble Arimaspians.
Whatever their beginnings, the Augurs were stewards of secrets since time immemorial and watched over them jealously; any who tried to steal them risked exile or death.
