The land has worn many names, each seizing on some facet of its deep, intricate character.
'Terra ultra silvam', land beyond the forest, is named in old documents, the forest likely being the dense Apuseni woodland separating Transylvania from Hungarian lands; the name morphed through 'Ultrasilvania' into Hungarian 'Transsilvania'.
Another name was 'Septum urbium' or 'Septemcastris', Seven Towns or Seven Castles, for its seven great fortified towns, none of which, the author sniffs, boasts a fortress to rival Svartrau's Greifberg castle.
