Blacksmith Guide

The Blacksmith is the vendor who makes your existing gear stronger instead of selling you new gear. Found in Brave Haven and at smith locations across the world, the blacksmith offers two services: raising an item's power level, and rerolling the random bonus effects on a piece you already own.
Upgrading item power
Each upgrade raises an item's power by 1 and costs emeralds. The price climbs the more the item has already been upgraded: the formula starts from a base of the item's drop power plus a flat amount, multiplied by a rarity factor (Common x1, Rare x1.1, Special x1.2, Unique x1.3), then multiplied again by 1 + 0.25 for every upgrade level the item will have gained including the current one. In practice, the first upgrade on a fresh item costs 25% over base, the second 50% over, and so on — costs accelerate fast.
Every gear type can be upgraded except talismans. There is a hard cap: an item can never exceed your hero level x 1.5 (rounded down), so at hero level 20 the ceiling is power 30, and at the level 100 cap it is 150. Upgrading is how a favorite low-power drop stays relevant as you level.
Rerolling effects
A reroll replaces one random bonus effect on an item with a new roll. Rerolls cost Echo Shards instead of emeralds: the first reroll on an item costs 1 shard, and the price climbs by 1 every second reroll on the same item, up to 20 shards from the 39th reroll onward. The counter belongs to the item, so a fresh drop starts back at 1 shard. Rerolls are permanent and cannot be undone, so reroll only gear you plan to keep.
Reroll access is gated by blacksmith level: any blacksmith can reroll common and rare items, but special items need a level 2 blacksmith (20 echo shards to unlock) and unique items need level 3 (40 echo shards). See Town Merchant Guide for the parallel merchant upgrade track, and Echo Shards for where the currency comes from.
