Secret Code / ARG

Secret Code / ARG

Before launch, Mojang ran an alternate-reality-game (ARG) for Minecraft Dungeons II that stretched from the March 2026 reveal all the way to September 18, 2026. Every puzzle was eventually solved by the community. The codes no longer unlock anything, but the full puzzle record is worth preserving — here is what happened, in order.

The trail begins: the Spicewood QR code

On March 21, the reveal trailer hid a QR code that pointed to an address ending in a long hex string: 0x7370696365776f6f64. Decoded, the hex reads "spicewood" — the game's internal codename, which had leaked a year earlier. An unlisted video carried the title "TJG KIF RDE LSRD," a simple cipher that decodes to UNLOCK THE PATH, setting the tone for everything that followed.

The launcher note blocks

On May 28, the Minecraft launcher itself became a puzzle board. Eight note blocks appeared in the Dungeons II tab, and playing them in the order 1, 3, 7, 6, 5, 2, 4, 8 spelled out runes reading 1NF3C7ED — "INFECTED" written in leetspeak. A second hidden sequence, 6, 5, 2, 7, 8, unlocked a video titled A SONG FOR THE LOST.

The note-block order then started something bigger: on June 7, a portal countdown began, and it ended exactly one second before the Xbox Games Showcase — a neat bit of timing that tied the puzzle trail directly to the game's biggest stage.

Off the Scales and the Harvest Fest vault

On July 20, "Off the Scales" kicked off: binary hidden in official profile pictures opened up channels on the #villager-life Discord, pulling the community hunt into social spaces.

Then came the Harvest Fest vault on August 20 — a four-sided vault with one cipher on each side. Solving all four sides produced the code 17412347, one of the longest concrete answers in the whole ARG.

The Grand Illusioner chase

On August 25, the trail went physical-meets-digital with the Grand Illusioner chase. The community pieced together torn diary pages, a world file, and blueprints, and a QR code at gamescom decoded to the phrase "hideoutfound." The Grand Illusioner is an Illager High Council member tied to the game's story, so this puzzle doubled as lore teasing.

Gear Up and the finale

The final chapter ran September 14–18, 2026, under the name "Gear Up!" — with the key phrase "Stop harmonizer first." The ARG officially closed on September 18, just under two weeks before launch.

What it unlocked

Notably, no cape, pet, or item was ever tied to the ARG. The rewards were the puzzles themselves and the story they told. All codes are now inert — solving them today unlocks nothing — but for players curious about the game's pre-launch history, the Spicewood-to-Gear-Up trail remains the complete record of how Mojang built the mystery.
