Overview

Chieftains changes Viking infantry into a more credible answer to heavy cavalry while strengthening the role of Berserks and Champions. Pair the upgrade with the units that can reach the opponent’s frontline safely.

Plan and execution

Research Chieftains when a Viking infantry army is already established and cavalry is a major threat. Use Berserks or Champions to hold contact with heavy cavalry, while Pikemen support them against direct mounted charges and ranged units cover the infantry’s approach. Keep the group concentrated and use the stronger trades to protect a push or reclaim contested ground.

Risks and adaptation

The upgrade does not make infantry fast or remove weaknesses to ranged damage and specialized counters. Viking Pikemen still lack the full Halberdier role; add ranged support and avoid chasing mobile armies across open terrain.
