Overview

A defensive siege line makes an approach costly while protecting a specific objective.

Plan and execution

Anchor siege behind a screen, leave room to retreat, use vision to focus the dangerous approach, and keep mobile units against flanks.

Risks and adaptation

Static positions can be bypassed or hit by area damage. Watch other routes and do not chase attackers away from the objective.

Decision example

Set Mangonels or other siege far enough behind a wall, hill, or infantry screen to fire on an approach without being the first unit hit. Use an Outpost or scout for vision; siege cannot defend a route it sees only after the enemy arrives. Keep a mobile reserve to stop a flank or a ram that slips past the main firing lane. If the enemy refuses the engagement and raids elsewhere, move the line toward the real objective rather than chasing the army into open ground.
