Overview

A screen, firing space, and retreat route keep ranged units from being surrounded.

Plan and execution

Use infantry, Spearmen, Monks, or terrain to block melee access. Focus immediate threats and regroup reinforcements before entering narrow ground.

Risks and adaptation

Screens can be pulled aside and ranged units trapped against terrain. Watch flanks and retreat before counters reach them.

Decision example

Before entering a fight, put the front line between the Archers and the direction from which cavalry can arrive. If the enemy uses Skirmishers, do not trade the whole ranged group into their counter; use a different unit or siege to remove them. A gap in the screen matters more than one extra volley, so retreat early enough to reform. Keep a path through your own buildings or terrain open, and rally newly trained Archers behind the army instead of sending them one by one into the fight.
