Overview

A siege push is easier to sustain when the escort controls nearby high ground and the routes an enemy army could use to dive.

Plan and execution

Move a screen onto the approaches before bringing siege forward. Keep ranged units with space to fire, hold an escape lane, and use scouts or Outposts to watch the flanks while the engines deploy.

Risks and adaptation

Siege packed into a narrow hill route can be trapped or hit by counter-siege. Avoid advancing beyond the army’s vision and pull back if the ground can no longer be held.

Decision example

Move the escort onto the hill or approach first, then bring the engines to a position with vision and a retreat path. Use a scout or Outpost to watch the side from which cavalry or enemy siege might appear. Do not crowd all units into one narrow ramp where a Mangonel shot can hit the whole formation. If the enemy takes the high ground back, withdraw the siege before the screen collapses and re-establish control from another route.
