Royal Halberdiers is available to the Spanish in the Fortress Age at a Church, after the Royal Decree to Claim the New World Home City Card has been sent. Research costs 1,000 Wood and takes 15 seconds, then delivers thirteen Guard Halberdiers to the Home City shipment point. It is also the Spanish route to obtaining Halberdiers: the technology does more than rename an existing unit. In Definitive Edition, Halberdiers receive Regeneration and Combat Promotions; update 14.43676 made the upgrade apply to existing Halberdiers as well. The technology appeared under earlier names: Quatrefage in the original game and Royal Alabarderos in an earlier Definitive Edition period, before the current Royal Halberdiers name. Plan the research so the delivered melee infantry arrives with the main army, where it can screen ranged units and siege from cavalry. Its slower infantry role makes it a poor choice for chasing mobile targets unsupported.

The upgrade also grants the Halberdiers a Regeneration ability and Combat Promotion, so the shipment is both an immediate force and a lasting change to eligible units. The Wood cost is substantial for a Spanish army that may also need artillery or buildings. Send the technology when the army can use a large anti-cavalry Infantry group and there is enough space to keep it supplied; avoid spending on it if the force cannot protect slow Halberdiers from ranged counters. Since it is a Church option, its timing can compete with other Church research and shipments, so choose according to the next fight rather than the unit count alone.
