Fortress Age
The Fortress Age is the third standard stage and a major military turning point. Many civilizations gain artillery, advanced infantry or cavalry, stronger shipments and additional economic options. The new tools can break a stalemate, but reaching the Age costs resources that might otherwise have produced units immediately.

How it works
Falconets and other artillery can threaten groups and buildings, while civilization-specific units and upgrades change how each army fights. Access is not identical across factions: some use unique buildings, shipments or alternative unit lines. The opponent’s available counters also become stronger, so an artillery push needs protection and scouting.
Player decision
Advance when the intended unlock can be used soon and the economy can still replace losses. A Fortress shipment or artillery arrival can create a decisive window; use it while the opponent is still preparing. If the opponent is already massing counters, add a screen or delay the commitment until the army can protect its siege.
Third Age military transition
The Fortress Age is the third standard Age and a major shift in the options available to many civilizations. It commonly unlocks artillery, advanced infantry or cavalry, stronger Home City shipments and additional economic choices. Falconets and other artillery can punish grouped units and threaten buildings, while civilization-specific rosters change how each army handles the new phase. Access is not identical for every civilization: some use unique buildings, alternative unit lines or special shipments. Reaching Fortress Age costs resources and time that could have produced an army immediately, so advance when the new unlock can be used soon and the economy can replace losses. A Fortress shipment or artillery arrival can create a timing window; protect it with infantry or cavalry screens and use scouting to anticipate counters. If the opponent is already massing anti-artillery or cavalry, prepare a screen before making a siege push. The Age is powerful because it adds tools, but those tools require production, protection and a plan. Compare Fortress Age with the current Commerce Age force and decide whether the transition will change the next engagement enough to justify its cost.
Economy and timing
The transition is most useful when resources are ready and the army can exploit a new unit, technology or shipment quickly. Preserve enough Food and Coin to rebuild after the age-up; spending everything on the transition may leave the settlement exposed. If the opponent pressures before the unlock arrives, delay the advance or produce defenders first. A well-timed Fortress shipment can stabilize a fight, but its value depends on the card and civilization. Use the linked Artillery Foundry, Falconet and Fort pages for specific production details.
Preparing the transition
Before advancing, choose the shipment or production that will use the new Age and gather the required resources without stopping worker production. Protect artillery with a screen and scout for anti-cavalry or Culverins.
Civilization-specific access
Some civilizations reach artillery and advanced unit lines through unique buildings or shipments. Check the civilization’s entry before assuming the standard Foundry roster or timing.
Transition decision
Advance when the new production and shipment can be used soon. If the economy cannot replace losses during the transition, continue defending in Commerce Age and build resources first.
What the Fortress Age unlocks
The Fortress Age is the third major age in standard progression and marks a shift toward stronger military options. It commonly opens advanced upgrades, artillery, additional Home City Cards and buildings, though the exact roster depends on civilization. Reaching it consumes resources and time, so account for pressure and whether the map can protect the transition. A Fortress shipment can deliver substantial support, making the first moments after aging a power spike. Keep production running to use the new options; the age-up itself is not a defense if the opponent arrives first.
Preparing for the transition
Before aging, scout the enemy and decide what the new age should accomplish: artillery against defenses, a stronger core unit, a new counter or a longer economy. Gather the resource mix the chosen age-up and follow-up production require, and leave population for planned reinforcements. A Fortress transition can wait when current-age units already answer the threat; waiting too long can expose the player to superior upgrades. Politician rewards differ by civilization, so use the specific faction entry instead of assuming a universal build order.
