Strangers' Quarters

Strangers’ Quarters is an Industrial Age technology for African civilizations, researched at the Town Center. It provides housing support for 100 population without requiring additional Huts or Town Centers, but it does not raise the civilization’s total population ceiling. It also reduces unit training time by 10% and automatic unit spawn time by 5%.

Effect & research conditions

The research costs 2,000 Influence and takes 30 seconds. Its housing effect supports 100 population without needing extra housing structures; it is not a +100 increase to the maximum population cap. Unit training time is reduced by 10% and automatic spawn time by 5%. The training-time reduction does not stack with the Imperial Age training-time bonus.

Research condition

African civilizations; Industrial Age; Town Center; 30 seconds; 2,000 Influence; housing support for 100 population without additional Huts or Town Centers, but does not increase the total population cap; unit training time -10% (does not stack with Imperial Age training-time bonus); automatic spawn time -5%.

When to research

Choose it for an African army that can use the housing support and will continue producing units after the research completes. The 2,000 Influence cost is substantial, and faster queues have little value while production buildings are idle. Keep the total population limit distinct from the housing provided by this technology when planning a large army.

Housing support is not a larger total population cap

The technology’s description says it supports 100 population without the need for Houses or Town Centers and explicitly notes that the total population is not increased. Treat the 100 as housing support, not as a change to the match’s maximum population ceiling. Other mode rules and existing capacity still determine how large an army the player can field.

Training and automatic spawns use different timers

Strangers’ Quarters reduces ordinary unit training time by 10% and spawn time for units generated automatically by 5%. The training reduction does not stack with the Imperial Age training-time bonus. The two effects therefore apply to different production processes, while the housing effect addresses support rather than raising the total cap.
