Function

Worker production keeps the economy growing but consumes resources and population. The Town Center can attack enemies and protect garrisoned workers, though its fire does not make it safe from sustained siege. Many modes limit how many Town Centers a player can establish.

Placement & timing

Keep worker production aligned with available resources and population space. Place additional Town Centers near safe resources or valuable map positions, and garrison workers when a raid arrives rather than losing them in the open.

The colony’s central building

The Town Center is the main economic structure in Age of Empires III. Standard random-map players begin with one, and it serves as the normal Home City shipment arrival point, trains Settlers and their civilization-specific counterparts, supports population and participates in Age advancement for most civilizations. It also garrisons workers, receives hero ransoms and has defensive attacks when occupied. Its multiple functions make it a high-value target and a core part of the economic plan. Losing it removes worker production and a key shipment point, so players should protect it even when the army is fighting elsewhere.

Cost, construction and limits

The current profile lists a cost of 500 Wood and a 60-second construction time, with up to eight builders and a 4-by-4 footprint. The standard build limit is one Town Center until the Fortress Age, after which the player can build two additional Town Centers for a maximum of three under the listed rules. A Settler or counterpart, Explorer or most heroes, Chasqui, or Covered Wagon can construct one where the civilization and mode permit. The Town Center supports 10 population. These values make a second or third Town Center an expansion investment: it costs Wood and builder time and must be placed where workers can gather safely.

Worker production and shipments

Town Centers train Settlers and their counterparts, maintaining the worker base that pays for units, buildings and research. They are also the default Home City shipment arrival point, although some cards or buildings change the destination. Keep worker production steady when the Food budget allows, but leave enough resources for military response and Age advancement. A shipment or new production building can compete with Settlers for the same resources. Multiple Town Centers increase worker production capacity but also require more Food to keep all queues active.

Aging and civilization exceptions

The Town Center is involved in Age advancement, but the method differs by civilization. Asian civilizations generally advance by constructing a Wonder, while African civilizations, Federal Americans and other unique systems use their own age-up structures or choices. The source profile notes that the Town Center provides ultimate technologies except for European and American civilizations. Do not infer that every faction researches every Age or technology at the Town Center. Follow the correct Age and civilization entry to confirm where a choice occurs.

Garrison and defensive fire

The Town Center can shelter up to 50 eligible Villagers and other listed units. Garrisoned Villagers enable its ranged attack; the profile describes the damage as 9 multiplied by the number of Villagers inside. This attack reaches 32, fires every 3 seconds and has a 2.0 multiplier against Villagers and 0.5 against Artillery. Garrison protects workers from direct attacks and allows them to contribute to defense, but they stop gathering while inside. The Town Center can also use a 30-damage Bombard attack at range 32 with a 1-area effect after the Palace of Iturbide card, and a 75-damage anti-siege attack at range 40 with a 3-second interval. Treat the card-enabled Bombard as a separate unlock, not a standard attack.

Siege and hero interactions

The Town Center is not immune to siege. Its anti-siege attack has a 0.5 multiplier against Siege units, and the Bombard option has its own card condition. Keep military units near a threatened center and use the garrison to shelter workers rather than expecting the building to defeat an entire army alone. Town Centers can ransom heroes under the rules of their scenario or mode, providing a recovery option when a hero has been captured. This interaction does not replace defending the building: an opponent can still attack the Town Center while the player tries to recover a hero.

Choosing expansion locations

A second Town Center is valuable when it creates safe worker production near a useful resource area or secures a route that the original base cannot cover. Consider the distance to nearby Hunts, mines, Woodlines, shore access and enemy approaches. A forward location can accelerate gathering but is vulnerable during construction; a rear location may be safer but add travel time for workers and shipments. Keep builders protected and ensure there is room for Houses or other structures around the 4-by-4 footprint. Avoid placing a Town Center so close to a Fort or another chokepoint that both become exposed to one siege position.

Town Center as shipment and production network

With multiple Town Centers, the player can distribute worker production and Home City arrival points across the colony. The extra sites can reduce travel to a remote resource zone and give a raid more than one target, but each center remains a major investment. Use the shipment point and nearby military production to support the area, and leave enough forces to respond if the opponent attacks one site. If a card specifies another delivery building, verify the actual arrival point rather than assuming every shipment appears at the original Town Center.

Version and balance notes

The Town Center cost changed from 600 Wood before Definitive Edition to 500 Wood in the current profile. The source also records changes to build and kill Experience in earlier patches. Civilizations, game modes and campaign missions can use different construction limits or scripted statistics. When comparing an older guide, confirm the version and mode before copying the Wood cost, Age access or Experience value. Use the current in-game panel for the active build.

Scaling Town Center defense

The garrison attack scales with the number of Villagers sheltered inside: the current profile records 9 ranged damage per garrisoned Villager before target multipliers, up to the building’s 50-unit garrison limit. The shot fires every 3 seconds at range 32, deals double damage to Villagers and half damage to Artillery, and therefore gives the center a meaningful response to a worker raid. It is still a defensive tool rather than a replacement for an army. Workers inside do not gather, and a siege unit can attack from outside the Town Center’s more limited response. Garrison only the workers needed to survive the raid and move the rest to a safer source when possible.

Training and construction access

Settlers and their counterparts build Town Centers, and several explorers or heroes can do so under their civilization’s rules. Chasqui and Covered Wagon are also listed as builders. This changes how an expansion is established: a wagon or hero can place a new center without sending a large worker group across open ground, while ordinary construction assigns builders away from gathering. Up to eight builders can contribute, but using more workers can finish the site sooner only at the cost of their resource work. Protect the construction point and avoid leaving the first Town Center without enough workers to maintain its queues.

Population support and shipment arrival

Each Town Center supports 10 population and acts as an arrival point for Home City shipments. The population support can ease an early housing bottleneck, but later army and worker production still require Houses or civilization-specific replacements. A second Town Center adds another shipment and worker-production site, which can improve access to a remote region; it also creates another large target. If a card or civilization effect changes the shipment landing point, verify the specified destination before using the center as a forward staging area.

Special attacks and card unlocks

The profile distinguishes a ranged attack that requires garrisoned Villagers, a building attack and an anti-siege attack. The Town Center’s Bombard option is tied to the Palace of Iturbide Home City Card; its listed 30 damage and range of 32 should not be confused with the 9-per-Villager garrison attack. The anti-siege attack reaches 40 and deals 75 damage with a 0.5 multiplier against Siege units. These separate options give some civilizations a way to pressure attackers or structures, but card and mode access should be checked before building a strategy around them.

Second and third Town Centers

The Fortress Age unlocks two additional Town Centers in the standard limit. Expansion is strongest when the new center lets workers gather a safe resource source or when it protects an area the original base cannot cover. Time the investment after scouting: a second center that arrives beside an empty woodline or exposed mine may not repay its 500 Wood. Spread workers across sites while maintaining a mobile defense, and consider the opponent’s siege capacity. If the enemy can attack both sites at once, protect the more valuable gathering zone and be ready to evacuate the other.

Balance the core queues

Workers and military units both rely on the Town Center’s economy. Before adding another worker queue, reserve Food and Coin for the next army batch or Age advance. When resources are tight, pause optional production deliberately rather than allowing every queue to stall. A Town Center is most useful when its worker output supports a plan the player can afford to sustain.

Garrison fire and the card-enabled bombard attack

The Town Center’s ordinary ranged attack depends on garrisoned Villagers: its profile lists nine damage multiplied by the number of Villagers inside, with range 32 and a three-second interval. Garrisoning therefore adds defensive fire while protecting workers, but it also removes those Villagers from gathering until they leave. The building can garrison up to 50 Villagers, although a large garrison is not a substitute for an army when siege units are attacking. A separate 30-damage Bombard attack against buildings is tied to the Palace of Iturbide card, and its attack profile should not be treated as an always-available default. The Town Center also supports shipments, hero ransom and worker production, so a raid can interrupt several functions at once. During an attack, prioritize saving exposed Villagers; after danger passes, restore gathering promptly and rebuild the economy rather than leaving workers idle inside.

Economic hub and worker production

The Town Center anchors a settlement: it trains Settlers or Villagers, receives Home City shipments and protects nearby workers through garrisoning. It is central to age advancement for many civilizations, though Asian factions use Wonders and other systems. Some Town Centers can ransom or support the recovery of heroes under civilization-specific rules.

Expansion and defense depend on the civilization

Additional Town Centers may arrive through age advancement, cards or unique units such as a Covered Wagon. Their placement secures resources and creates another worker queue, but an exposed site can be destroyed before it pays back. The Town Center’s cost, population, attack and technology options vary across civilizations and versions. Check the faction-specific entry before applying a generic build order, and keep a military screen near new settlements.
