Exploration Age
The Exploration Age is the opening stage of a standard Age of Empires III match. The player establishes an economy, explores the map, collects early rewards and chooses how to reach the Commerce Age. Most civilizations have limited early military production, though civilization-specific options can create pressure before the first advance.

How it works
Starting resources and units depend on civilization and mode. The Explorer or equivalent hero reveals terrain and can collect Treasures, while Settlers gather Food, Wood and Coin and the Town Center continues worker production. Early Home City shipments may provide workers, resources or units. Trading Posts and Native settlements can also become important depending on the map.
Player decision
Keep worker production active and use the hero to scout rather than leaving it idle. Locate Hunts, mines, Trade Route sites and nearby opponents before choosing the age-up. Preserve enough resources to respond if the enemy attacks, and select a reward that supports the opening you intend to play.
Balance economy, scouting, and the first shipment
The opening age is when Settlers gather initial resources, the Explorer reveals nearby ground, and early Home City shipments begin shaping the match. Keep the Town Center producing workers while deciding whether to contest Treasures, a Trade Route, or a Native settlement. The best opening depends on civilization and map; avoid delaying the Commerce advance for a bonus that does not support the chosen plan.
Plan the first transition before spending every resource
The Commerce Age advance competes with Houses, market improvements, and early troops. Decide which Home City shipment and age-up reward support the intended opening, then maintain enough Food and Coin to complete the advance. Map resources and civilization-specific unit access can change the timing, so use scouting to adjust rather than follow one universal sequence.
What the opening age allows
The Exploration Age is the first Age in the current Definitive Edition terminology; older original-game guides may call it the Discovery Age. It supports the opening economy and exploration, but normal military development is limited. A small force can still arise through captured or converted Treasure guardians, pets, and civilization-specific exceptions, so “limited” is more accurate than assuming every match is army-free. Standard priorities include keeping Settlers or Villagers working, using the Explorer to reveal nearby resources and Treasures, and deciding whether to claim a Trading Post or native site before advancing. The Commerce Age unlocks a broader military and technology economy, so measure optional early spending against the cost and timing of that transition. When following an older guide, match the named Age rather than assuming the terminology denotes a different game stage.
