Treasure
A Treasure is a guarded map reward that can grant resources, units, Experience or another benefit. It creates an early scouting objective and can shape which parts of the map an Explorer contests.

How it works
Defeat the Treasure guardians, then use an eligible hero or unit to claim the reward. The Treasure’s guardian strength and reward depend on the map; some treasures have special effects, and an Explorer can be incapacitated during a dangerous attempt.
Player decision
Scout nearby Treasures early and take safe rewards before the opponent does. Bring support against a strong guardian and compare the reward with the time and risk of diverting the Explorer from scouting or a Trading Post.
How treasures work on the map
Treasures are optional map rewards guarded by wildlife, outlaws or other scenario-specific defenders. An eligible hero must first defeat the guardians and then interact with the reward; the Explorer, War Chief and some other heroes can perform this task, while ordinary units generally cannot claim a land treasure. Reward value often tracks the difficulty of the guard, and the map controls which treasure and guardian combinations appear. A reward may grant Food, Wood, Coin, Experience, a unit or a temporary or permanent improvement, so scouting lets a player judge whether it is worth the detour. Expansions and maps add their own reward and guardian sets. Some Definitive Edition maps place treasures on water: unlike land treasures, these can be claimed by any unit able to interact, and the collection is immediate rather than using the usual hero animation. Identify the reward and its location before entering combat so the hero does not waste health on a low-value cache.
Risk, timing and guardian control
The early game often rewards taking nearby treasures before the opponent can reach them, but a guardian may be stronger than the starting Explorer can safely defeat alone. Bring an escort, use the hero’s attacks to draw one defender at a time where possible, and keep a retreat route open. If the Explorer collapses, the reward can be lost while it recovers or while the opponent claims the area. Compare the potential resource or Experience gain with the time spent walking away from a Trading Post site, scouting an enemy route or returning to the Town Center. A high-value treasure can justify support; an exposed low-value reward may not. Treasure guardians can also affect the map’s tempo: defeating them opens a safe path through an area and can preserve access to hunts or a Trading Post. In team games, coordinate which player’s hero claims the reward and avoid doubling effort on the same guarded site. Treat map-specific or water treasures according to their own interaction rules, since not all use the standard land-hero claim mechanic.
Reward types and their opportunity cost
A resource treasure can accelerate an age-up or keep unit production running, while an Experience reward may move the Home City shipment meter sooner. Unit rewards immediately add a guardian or allied troop to the force, and upgrade-style treasures can affect a hero or army beyond the immediate encounter. These rewards should be compared with the trip and fight required to claim them. A hero that spends several minutes clearing a distant cache may lose a nearby Trading Post or leave a vulnerable base without vision. Some maps also change the reward through special treasure sets, including named treasures and scenario-specific effects; do not apply one map’s reward list to every random map. Guardian strength usually signals the scale of the reward, but a stronger guard can inflict enough damage to force the Explorer out of later objectives. Bring an escort when the guardian cannot be defeated safely, and account for any recovery time if the hero collapses. The practical benefit is both the reward itself and the area opened by defeating its guards.
Hero-specific differences
The claiming unit is one reason to keep an Explorer or other eligible hero alive after the opening. Some civilizations use a War Chief or Monk instead, and campaign scenarios may provide a specific hero with different survival rules. Water rewards in Definitive Edition can use a simpler interaction than land caches, so a nearby Fishing Boat or ship may collect one without the normal guardian sequence. Always inspect the prompt and reward shown on the map; the icon and location can reveal whether the cache is worth contesting.
Map rewards protected by guardians
Treasures are map objects that can provide resources, experience or units when collected by an eligible Hero, Villager or ship. Most are guarded by Treasure Guardians, which must be defeated before collection. The number and type of guardians generally reflect the reward’s difficulty. Explore early to identify valuable sites and decide whether the starting force can claim them safely.
Collect safely and avoid resetting the fight
A guardian group responds when attacked, and guardians can return to their post and heal if the attacking units move too far away. Keep the fight near the Treasure, focus the guardians and collect the reward immediately after the area is safe. A War Chief, Explorer, Padre or unit with a treasure-collection ability may have special utility, but exact access varies by civilization. Do not chase a guardian far from its site or expose the Explorer for a low-value reward.
