Covered Wagon
Covered Wagon is a deployable construction unit that establishes a Town Center at its destination. It usually arrives through a Home City or scenario rule rather than being trained as an ordinary Settler. Once it reaches a valid site, the wagon builds the Town Center without requiring the normal Settler construction queue. It is a valuable expansion asset, but Town Center limits and mode-specific rules still apply, and the wagon can be lost before construction is complete.

Role & counters
Scout the location and confirm that it is a valid Town Center site before moving the wagon forward. Choose a position near resources or map control that can be defended, then cover the wagon and the building while construction proceeds. The wagon does not replace ordinary workers for later gathering or construction, so assign Settlers to support the new settlement once it is established.
When to field it
Deploy it when a second Town Center can expand the economy or secure a useful area without leaving the site isolated. A forward Town Center may reach resources sooner but also creates a target; judge the opponent’s army and route before committing. If the match rules already meet the build limit, place it only where permitted.
Town Center construction and access
The Covered Wagon is a civilian construction unit that turns into one Town Center. Its regional names are Town Travois for Native American civilizations, Town Rickshaw for Asian civilizations and Town Center Builder for African civilizations. The wagon is not a combat unit: it has 500 hit points, 20% siege resistance, speed 4.0 and line of sight 18, but no attack. It takes five seconds to train where production is available and builds the Town Center 33% faster, completing the structure in about 45 seconds. The resulting Town Center is free, but the wagon’s access and population limit still follow the civilization’s rules. Most civilizations receive one through a Home City Card after reaching the appropriate age, or through The Bishop when advancing to the Fortress Age. Portuguese receive one at the beginning of each Age as a civilization bonus. In Nomad mode, each player begins with a wagon instead of a Town Center. The United States can train wagons at the State Capitol; some Mexican revolutions can gain a State Capitol through a Home City Card, and the United States California Federal State ships a wagon while increasing its train limit. Chinese, Inca and Ottoman card access differs from the shared European options, so do not assume a universal card unlock. The wagon’s strongest use is to establish a second resource base, secure a strategic route or create a defensive anchor. Place it near resources the first Town Center cannot safely reach, but keep it under protection while it unpacks. A Town Center can train Settlers and receive shipments, so the wagon can turn a successful expansion into both economic production and a forward rally point. Building close to an enemy may offer map control but risks losing the entire expansion before it repays its cost. Choose a site with a safe retreat route and enough space to defend the villagers who will work nearby. A Covered Wagon has no offensive strength and is vulnerable to any unit that can attack it. Escort it with troops, avoid moving it through explored enemy territory alone and use its line of sight to inspect the site before construction. The shared limit with Town Centers means an extra wagon may not increase the build count if the civilization is already at its limit. Some cards and age-up effects change that limit or provide multiple wagons. Check whether the new Town Center can actually be placed before sending a card into a contested area. Upgrades can improve the wagon. Oregon Trail for the United States adds 25% hit points and speed while lowering cost by 25%; other civilization-specific technologies can reduce cost or add small hit point bonuses. Jagiellonian Legacy has several age-up interactions, delivering three wagons for the Chinese when using the Temple of Heaven to reach Industrial, and one under specified Inca, European and United States age-up choices. Those are conditional shipments, not a general guarantee. Separate the basic Town Center construction rule from these civilization- and card-specific exceptions when planning an expansion.
Use the wagon to claim a defensible expansion site
Because the wagon transforms into a Town Center, its route deserves the same protection as a Settler carrying a major investment. Scout with a military unit, clear nearby treasure guardians and identify the resource line before moving the wagon into range. The new Town Center can defend Settlers and receive shipments, but it should not be placed so far from support that the enemy can surround it. If the player’s current Town Center limit is already reached, confirm whether a card or civilization bonus raises the limit before committing to another wagon. A successful placement can secure a trade route or a contested mine; a failed one loses both the wagon and the time spent moving it.
Expansion timing and support
An age-up politician that grants the wagon should be evaluated by both its economic cost and the value of the additional production site. The Bishop arrives during the Fortress Age transition, while a Home City card can be selected as a separate shipment. If the opponent has an army ready, use the wagon only when a defensive escort can accompany it. If the map is quiet, a second Town Center can begin paying back its cost through additional Settler production. The structure’s placement remains permanent, so choose the resource or route that will matter for the rest of the match.
A shipment wagon that places a Town Center
The Covered Wagon constructs a Town Center 33% faster than the ordinary build time, completing it in 45 seconds in the documented profile. For most civilizations it is available through a Home City Card, so its value depends on deck choice and shipment timing. It can expand territory, add another Villager queue and secure a new resource area, but a Town Center placed outside military support can be destroyed before it pays back.
Use the placement to secure a resource zone
Choose a location near safe hunts, mines or a Trade Route and leave population space for the arriving workers. The faster construction is especially useful when the opponent is contesting a map edge or when a new base must be established before resources run out. Nomad mode has different starting rules and can provide Covered Wagons as part of the initial setup. Check the game mode and selected card before assuming the wagon will be available in a standard match.
Definitive Edition durability and Experience
The Covered Wagon establishes a Town Center and is delivered by cards or scenario rules rather than trained as an ordinary worker. In the Definitive Edition it has 500 hit points; before that edition it had 250. It currently awards no Experience when killed, whereas the pre-Definitive Edition profile listed 60. These historical differences matter when reading older build orders and scenario notes, but the wagon’s strategic value remains the expansion it enables. Protect it during transit and construction, since losing it delays the extra Town Center and the economic space it was meant to secure.
