Counter-Terrorist rifle choice

Counter-Terrorists can buy the M4A1-S for $2,900. It occupies the same rifle loadout choice as the M4A4, so a player selects one before a match rather than buying both as primary-rifle alternatives in a round. The M4A1-S carries 20 rounds with 60 in reserve, compared with the M4A4’s 30-round magazine and 120-round reserve. That smaller supply matters during repeated bursts, smoke engagements and multi-opponent holds.

The rifle’s weapon record lists 38 base damage and a 600-round-per-minute automatic rate. The hitbox table shows the results by body region: a head hit is 132 without armor and 92 with armor; chest and arms take 37/26, abdomen and pelvis 47/33, and legs 28 in either column. Those per-hit values are distinct from the base-damage field and explain why accurate follow-up shots remain important against protected opponents.

Suppressor, accuracy and ammunition

The suppressor is attached by default and can be detached or reattached with the secondary-fire input. That action takes time, so changing it during a duel can leave the player unable to fire. With the suppressor fitted, the M4A1-S has a quieter report, lower recoil, high accuracy and no visible bullet tracers. Its shot is harder to locate, but quiet firing does not make the player impossible to detect. Removing the suppressor increases recoil and spread and reduces accuracy, so it is generally kept on.

The Wiki lists a 28-metre accurate range and a 0.94 range modifier. The M4A4 has a 0.97 modifier, so the M4A1-S loses damage more quickly with distance according to the listed field. Use controlled taps or short bursts when holding a longer angle; automatic fire can be useful at close range, but the 20-round magazine leaves fewer attempts before a reload. Its 3.1-second reload takes the rifle out of play, so move behind cover before reloading. Since the March 18, 2026 reload change, completing a magazine-fed reload discards any rounds left in the magazine and takes a full magazine from reserve.

When the M4A1-S fits

The quieter report and lack of tracers can help a defender fire through smoke or maintain uncertainty about the exact firing position. The suppressor also adds length to the weapon model and can protrude around a tight corner, potentially exposing a held angle. Keep the barrel inside cover and move when an opponent has identified the position. Teammate utility such as a Smoke Grenade can block a return sightline; it does not remove the rifle’s limited ammunition supply.

Choose the M4A1-S when its suppressor and firing profile suit the team’s plan. The M4A4 offers the larger magazine and reserve, while the M4A1-S has a slower listed rate and the suppressor. Both cost $2,900 in the current CS2 record. Compare the choice with the Terrorist AK-47 and the lower-cost FAMAS while planning armor, utility and the team Economy.

Counter-Strike 2 update history

During the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test on August 15, 2023, Valve unified StatTrak placement on the two CS2 M4 models so the counter would not cover stickers. A November 8, 2023 CS2 update fixed missing distant gunfire for the unsilenced M4A1-S. On August 14, 2025, the M4A1-S deploy animation was improved.

On March 18, 2026, CS2 changed magazine-fed reloads: completing a reload discards the rounds left in the magazine and takes a full magazine from reserve. The update also changed how reserve ammunition and the current magazine are displayed. On September 22, 2026, players gained a slower silent-reload option by pressing and holding the reload key. These dated changes affect cosmetic placement, audio, animation and ammunition handling; they do not change the rifle’s suppressor into a sound-proofing effect.

Suppressor, sound and firing position

The suppressor is attached by default and can be removed or reattached with secondary fire. The change takes long enough that it is a poor mid-fight adjustment. Keeping it attached preserves the quieter firing sound and the rifle’s better recoil and accuracy profile; removing it increases recoil and spread, lowers jumping accuracy and makes the shooter easier to identify. The sound is quieter, not inaudible.

The suppressed rifle does not produce the ordinary visible bullet tracers described for other weapons, which can make it harder for an opponent behind smoke to infer the firing position. The long suppressor can protrude beyond a tight corner and reveal the player’s position. Angle the weapon toward the inside of the corner; removing the suppressor may help see around a particularly tight edge, but gives up the handling and information advantages. The small magazine and reserve also make repeated smoke sprays expensive.

A September 22, 2026 CS2 update added a slower silent reload when the reload key is held. The player can trade reload speed for a quieter cue when there is enough cover and time. The March 18, 2026 magazine rule still applies: a completed reload discards rounds left in the current magazine.

Shared M4 StatTrak placement

The August 15, 2023 update unified StatTrak placement on both CS2 M4 models so the counter would not occlude applied stickers. The note concerns the displayed position of the counter and does not report a change to weapon behavior or the StatTrak counting system. See M4A4, Stickers and Weapon Skins.

M4A1-S | Solitude limited-time finish (August 14, 2025)

The August 14, 2025 update made M4A1-S | Solitude available as a limited-time item in The Armory. This records the finish’s release context only: it does not change the rifle’s damage, recoil, magazine, silencer or other weapon statistics. The source does not provide an end date or a visual description of the finish, so its temporary availability is kept separate from the M4A1-S’s weapon behavior.

Deploy animation update (August 14, 2025)

The August 14, 2025 update improved the M4A1-S deploy animation. It does not report a change to the rifle’s draw time, firing behavior or weapon statistics. The M4A1-S | Solitude item release on the same date is a separate cosmetic availability record.
