Damage and firing control
The Tec-9’s 18-round magazine and 54-round reserve provide substantially more pistol ammunition than a 12-round automatic sidearm. It is semi-automatic, so the player chooses each shot rather than relying on automatic fire. The recorded 500-round-per-minute rate is a maximum cadence, not a recommendation to click continuously: rapid firing makes its recoil wild and reduces accuracy. The source’s hitbox table lists 130 unarmored and 118 armored head damage, 40/37 to abdomen and pelvis, 32/29 to chest and arms, and 24 to the legs.
The Wiki characterizes the Tec-9 as having good running accuracy and strong penetration. A close-range headshot can defeat a helmet under the described rules, but repeatable value requires deliberate taps while settled. Spraying is only useful at very close distance. The 13-metre accurate range and 0.79 range modifier make distance and damage falloff relevant even when the initial shot feels easy to place.
Force-buy and team role
At $500, the Tec-9 is Terrorist-exclusive and can preserve funds for armor in a force-buy. The source recommends a coordinated team buy and a group push after losing the pistol round, rather than sending one player forward alone. A force buy works because several players create trade opportunities; an isolated Tec-9 user can be overwhelmed while reloading or recovering from a missed tap.
The CS2 record lists a 2.5-second reload, 90.2% armor penetration and $300/$150 kill rewards in Competitive and Casual. The 18-round magazine is generous for a pistol, but still small against several defenders. Reload from cover and preserve rounds for the next target. Compare the Counter-Terrorist Five-SeveN, both-team CZ75-Auto and heavier Desert Eagle for other pistol roles.
CS2 ammunition update
Under the March 18, 2026 Counter-Strike 2 reload rule, completing a reload discards rounds remaining in the magazine and supplies a fresh magazine from reserve. A Tec-9 player should weigh the 18 loaded rounds against the 54-round reserve before topping off. The HUD now presents reserve ammunition as magazine units and indicates how full the current magazine is.
