Overview

Abd ar-Rahman al-Ghafiqi leads a force through mountain passes patrolled by enemy armies and exposed to dangerous cold. Preserve the commander, enough soldiers, and a supply cart while choosing a route around the region’s fortified strongholds.

Player approach

Crossing the Pyrenees is an escort mission with three conditions to protect: al-Ghafiqi must live, at least fifteen military units must remain, and one Trade Cart must reach the northern camp.

Step-by-step plan

Divide the large starting army into two manageable groups and keep the Trade Carts behind the main fighting line. Draw the first ambush toward your army with a fast cavalry unit, then clear it in controlled waves. Take the route with fewer defenders when the path divides, and keep al-Ghafiqi near the center of the formation rather than leading the march. Use ranged units and cavalry to remove pursuers before they can reach the carts, and count surviving troops before the final approach.

Risks and adjustments

The objective can fail from casualties even if al-Ghafiqi reaches camp. Do not let the Trade Carts enter combat, and avoid optional battles that reduce the army below the required strength.
