Bagains gives Bulgarian Two-Handed Swordsmen a distinct frontline role against many low-cost melee units and some heavily armored infantry. Use the upgrade to turn an affordable infantry mass into a durable answer where the enemy cannot avoid contact.
Plan and execution
Research Bagains when Two-Handed Swordsmen are already in production and the opponent relies on Halberdiers, Hussars, Eagle Warriors, or Huskarl-type units. Keep the infantry in a compact group and support it with ranged units or siege so it can reach the fight without being kited. Use it to protect gold units, contest a choke, or absorb the opponent’s cheap melee screen while cavalry attacks the flanks.
Risks and adaptation
The armor does not make the Swordsmen universally superior to Champions. Some civilization bonuses and unique technologies change the matchup, and ranged units or specialized counters can still defeat them. Do not use the upgrade as a reason to march unsupported infantry across open terrain.
