Overview

Upgrade a preserved Archer group into Crossbows and attack before the opponent completes a response.

Plan and execution

Keep Archers alive in Feudal Age, reserve resources for Castle Age and the Crossbow upgrade, then add range upgrades and production. Move as one group, use open firing lanes, and keep a retreat route.

Risks and adaptation

Small waves are easy to stop. Scout for Mangonels, Skirmishers, and fortified positions; add support or pause rather than feeding units.

Decision example

The upgrade is strongest when Feudal Archers survive into Castle Age as one group. Keep them away from risky Town Center dives, then reserve the food and gold needed to research Crossbowman promptly. Move toward a scouted resource that the defender cannot easily abandon, with a Spearman screen or mobile scout checking the flanks. Add range or armor research that improves the current fight. If a Mangonel appears, split the ranged group and either remove it with support or retreat before one shot destroys the timing.
