Holcans helps Mayan infantry and Eagle Warriors remain in the fight longer, making it a support upgrade for protecting the civilization’s ranged core. Use the tougher frontline to create room for archers rather than sending it out alone.
Plan and execution
Research Holcans when Eagle Warriors or infantry are already screening a large archer group. Keep the front close enough to protect the archers, use Eagles to intercept raids or chase vulnerable siege, and add the appropriate ranged support against units that punish infantry. The upgrade is especially useful when the opponent’s army would otherwise break through the Mayan frontline quickly.
Risks and adaptation
Eagles and infantry still lose to concentrated counters when isolated. Holcans does not grant a cavalry unit or repair the Mayan Swordsman line’s weaknesses, so preserve the ranged mass and support the frontline with the right counters.
