Overview

Most units occupy population space; houses and some civilization-specific structures increase the amount available.

Avoiding a production stop

Villagers, military units, and many support units share the player’s population cap. Houses and some civilization-specific structures increase available space, while the match settings can set a maximum. Watch the free-space number before a new Town Center or multiple military queues begin producing; blocked queues waste the timing those buildings were meant to create.

Late-game allocation

Near the cap, decide how much room is needed for gatherers, trade, siege, Monks, and the fighting army. More military population may win a short battle but reduce the economy that replaces losses. Some units use population more efficiently than others, and some modes or civilizations alter housing rules, so check the specific entry before following a standard build.
