The Best Laid Plans river-control opening
The Best Laid Plans has a scripted ally switch that can be answered with prepared Petards, while river crossings and defensive walls determine how many fronts you must hold. Prepare for the betrayal before investing in a broad field army.

Overview
The Best Laid Plans has a scripted ally switch that can be answered with prepared Petards, while river crossings and defensive walls determine how many fronts you must hold. Prepare for the betrayal before investing in a broad field army.
Plan and execution
On difficulties where Capua turns hostile, train and shelter enough Petards to strike its Castle as soon as the switch occurs. Use a small number of Villagers to wall the narrow northern approach and close other entries while retaining one controlled route; this channels attacks toward the river. Contest the water with Galleons, which can pressure the tower from outside its range, and use Dromons or Demolition Ships against clustered crossings and siege. Keep the remaining ground force near the open approach and be ready to reclaim the Castle and hire the mercenaries when the trigger fires.
Risks and adaptation
Capua’s betrayal differs by difficulty, so confirm the scenario conditions before committing all resources to Petards. Do not wall every opening if that changes enemy behavior or traps your own garrison. Prioritize hostile siege on the river crossing, and keep enough land defense to protect the base if the fleet is diverted.
