Dakota
Dakota is a Definitive Edition land map with wide prairie, forests and ponds, divided by two red mesas near the center. Two Trade Routes pass through the space between the mesas, while settlements near the outer regions can provide Cree or Cheyenne access.

Map character
Scout the passages between the mesas and identify both Trade Routes before committing to the center. The two hills create defensible positions but restrict movement, so an army on one side may not reinforce the other quickly. The available settlement choices can support different economic plans; inspect the actual sites and effects in the match.
What to scout
Hold a passage if it protects a route post or blocks a direct attack, but keep another path open for reinforcements. Stagecoach or Iron Horse improves both players’ Trade Routes on this map, so check route ownership before paying to upgrade. Prioritize connected control and avoid dividing the army across the mesas without vision and a reliable crossing.
Route control through the mesa passages
The mesas shape the map’s main contest: two Trade Routes lie in the central space, while open prairie around them can expose units approaching from the sides. Use the ridges to anchor a defense, but scout around both ends so the opponent cannot bypass it. A Trade Route upgrade can help both teams, so its value depends on who holds more posts and can exploit the improved route. Settlement choices near the map edges add economic or military options, but should not draw the army away from the central crossings without a plan.
