Great Plains

Great Plains places starting areas and the Trade Route toward the southeast, with open ground and Native settlements extending northwest. Broad sightlines help scouting and mobile armies, but also leave distant gatherers exposed.

Map character

Sweep northwest early to locate settlements, Hunts and safe expansion space; check the southeastern route before investing in Trading Posts. Open terrain reveals approaching forces but offers little natural cover, so watch workers gathering beyond the Town Center’s immediate protection.

What to scout

Choose sites the first army can hold. A route post or Native alliance is valuable only if its position does not leave the Town Center and outer gathering lines open to raids. Use mobile units to protect distant resources and respond to cavalry pressure.

Plan around open sightlines and route exposure

The Trade Route lies toward the southeast while Native settlements and open ground extend northwest. Scout those areas before choosing a Trading Post or expansion direction. Long sightlines make approaching forces easier to see but leave workers exposed at distant Hunts. Keep a mobile response near remote gathering and use the open terrain to detect pressure before it reaches the Town Center.

Open sightlines and exposed expansion

Great Plains has broad open ground, with the Trade Route toward the southeast and Native settlements and open terrain extending northwest. Long sightlines can help reveal an approaching army, but they also leave workers at distant Hunts exposed. Scout both directions before deciding whether to secure the route or an alliance settlement first. The actual resource, treasure and settlement placement varies with the generated map.

Keep a response near remote resources

An expansion is valuable only while it can be defended. Use mobile units to cover gathering lines outside the Town Center's immediate protection, and avoid sending all of the army toward the Trade Route while the opponent can raid the northwest. Trading Posts and Native alliances can support different plans, but their value depends on which sites appear and whether the player can hold them. Use the open view to spot pressure early, then reposition before exposed workers take losses.
