Great Rift

Great Rift is a Definitive Edition map in The African Royals set in a wide East African valley. A winding river crosses the terrain, a short Trade Route provides a shipment objective and passable lower cliffs lead to Somali settlements, livestock and other resources.

Map character

Players begin in defensible positions, but nearby resources can run out, making timely expansion important. Scout the river bends and lower cliff passages to find routes into the valley and to the Somali settlement. Desert Archers and Desert Warriors are listed Outlaws. The map is bountiful at the start, but the limited length of the Trade Route and nearby resource depletion make scouting and expansion timing central.

What to scout

Use the secure starting location to establish the economy, then move before the nearest resources are exhausted. The short Trade Route can be contested quickly, so decide whether an early Trading Post is defensible or whether the force should first secure livestock and deposits below the cliffs. Hold a crossing or keep a mobile reserve to protect reinforcements as the base expands.

A defensible start with a reason to move

Great Rift gives players protected starting locations, but its source description warns that nearby resources run out. This creates a timing tradeoff: the opening can be secure, yet waiting too long lets the opponent control the lower valley. Identify the next resource area and passable cliff route early, then move while the army can still defend workers.

The river and short route shape objectives

A winding river and short Trade Route provide landmarks and crossing decisions. The Somali settlement and livestock lie around passable lower cliffs, so the valley is reachable rather than fully separated by terrain. Scout both the route and the lower approaches; an opponent can exploit a different passage if the army commits to defending only one crossing.
