Research costs 2,000 Wood and 2,000 Coin and takes 30 seconds. The 50% increase affects the listed naval units, while the named Legendary upgrade applies to Battle Canoes and Cannon Boats. Because this is an expensive late-game investment, check how many eligible ships are already in the fleet and whether production can continue afterward.

When to research
Research when the African fleet is a meaningful part of the late-game plan and the water can be held long enough to use the improved ships. It does not help land units or ships outside the listed classes. If the opponent controls the water or the match is ending, spend the resources on immediate units and defenses instead.
Commit to a fleet that can exploit the upgrade
The value scales with the number of Fishing Canoes, Battle Canoes and Cannon Boats the player expects to use. A small fleet may not repay the cost, while a defended group of upgraded warships can make the investment meaningful. Protect the Port and naval production line during research, then use the added durability and damage to contest enemy ships or support coastal pressure. The technology is Imperial Age, so budget it alongside the economy needed to maintain the fleet.
