Long Lines

Long Lines is a Commerce Age Dock technology that improves the gathering rate of Fishing Ships. It is the second step after Gill Nets, so it rewards a player who has already invested in water economy and expects the boats to continue working.

Fishing ship gather work rate for fish and whale +30%

Effect

At the Dock or Port, research takes 30 seconds and costs 200 Wood and 200 Coin. After Gill Nets has been researched, Long Lines makes Fishing Ships gather from Fish and Whales 30% faster. The requirement means it is not an opening upgrade and its benefit applies only to the relevant fishing work.

Research condition

Available in the Commerce Age at Dock, Port; requires Gill Nets. Research time: 30 seconds. Cost: 200 wood, 200 coin. Civilization-specific building access can vary.

Research decision

Research it when several Fishing Ships are gathering from safe schools and the water economy will continue long enough to repay both upgrades. If the coast is contested or the schools are nearly depleted, spend the resources on ships, defenses or land gathering instead. Protect the Dock and fleet so the improved rate can be used.

A second-step fishing upgrade

Long Lines requires Gill Nets and is researched in the Commerce Age at a Dock or Port. It costs 200 Wood and 200 Coin, takes 30 seconds and increases Fishing Ship gathering from Fish and Whales by 30%. Since the earlier Gill Nets research is also required, count both technology costs when estimating the investment. The upgrade does not add stock to fish or whale resources and does not help military ships fight.

Use the fleet long enough to repay it

The stronger gathering rate is most useful when several Fishing Ships can continue working safe schools or Whales for a sustained period. It is less attractive when the water is contested, the resource is nearly depleted or the Dock cannot be protected. Compare the research with adding another Fishing Ship or moving Villagers to land resources, and make sure a route remains open to the relevant nodes. The cumulative investment only pays off if the improved boats can keep gathering.
