Effect

The effect applies to Fishing Ships gathering Food from fish or Coin from whales, according to the resource being gathered. It does not improve ship movement, combat or the amount of resources placed in the map school.

Research condition

Available in the Exploration Age at Dock, Port. Research time: 30 seconds. Cost: 90 wood, 90 coin. Civilization-specific building access can vary.

Research decision

Research when several Fishing Ships can work safely over time. Protect the fishing area and compare the upgrade with adding boats or investing in land gathering if water is vulnerable.

A water-economy upgrade

Gill Nets is researched at a Dock in the Exploration Age and raises Fishing Ship gathering from fish and whales by 15%. It does not increase the resource available in a school or improve combat and movement. Its return depends on boats gathering safely for a sustained period, so protect the fishing area and compare the research with producing another boat.

Gathering bonus across fish and Whales

Gill Nets increases Fishing Ship gathering from fish and Whales by 15%. Fish provide Food and Whales provide Coin, so the technology can improve two parts of a water economy. It does not increase the resource stock in a school or whale and does not change ship movement or combat. The Exploration Age research at a Dock or Port costs 90 Wood and 90 Coin and takes 30 seconds; access can vary by civilization.

Build the water economy before upgrading it

Research Gill Nets when boats are already gathering safely and the water route is likely to remain useful long enough to repay the cost. If the opponent can contest the coast, a new Fishing Ship, naval escort or land economy may be more important. Long Lines is the later technology and requires Gill Nets, so consider whether the map and expected match length justify the complete upgrade path rather than evaluating the first step in isolation.
