Effect & research conditions

Research it at a Trading Post or Tambo on a Mapuche settlement. The technology costs 200 Food and 200 Wood and takes ten seconds. Its 50% increase applies to Hand Infantry siege attack, so the affected unit class must reach a building for the bonus to matter.

Research condition

Exploration Age; Trading Post or Tambo on a Mapuche settlement. Cost: 200 Food and 200 Wood; research time: 10 seconds.

When to research

Research before a planned structure push when the army can protect its Hand Infantry during the approach. It is a poor response to a unit fight with no building target, and the settlement site must be secured. Keep ranged support or a screen with the infantry so the siege bonus is not lost to enemy fire before they reach the target.

Siege attack is distinct from combat damage

The 50% increase is specifically for Hand Infantry siege attack. It does not make the same units deal 50% more damage to enemy infantry or cavalry. Build the army around a structure objective if researching the technology, and use unit counters to win the approach before switching the infantry to the building.

Secure the Mapuche site and timing

The technology is available from the Exploration Age at a Trading Post or Tambo placed on a Mapuche settlement. Its 200 Food and 200 Wood cost is modest compared with later upgrades, but the alliance site still needs to be scouted and held. Start the research before the push, then escort the Hand Infantry to the target rather than leaving them exposed while they walk across the map.
