Map character

Use the Explorer to follow the wadeable river branches upstream and locate Treasures, goats and other resource pockets. Because troops can cross the water on foot, check both banks before building a Dock or treating a river as a permanent wall. Keep the main force near a crossing while the Explorer scouts ahead.

What to scout

Explore the branches when an early Treasure or livestock reward can support the opening, but do not send the whole army into a narrow river corridor without checking the far bank. Use the crossings to flank or reinforce on foot; ships are not required just to reach the other side. A retreat path matters if outlaws or enemy troops appear.

Wadeable waterways and exploration

Parallel Rivers is a Definitive Edition land map whose rivers can be crossed on foot. Its description encourages players to move upstream in search of Treasures, goats and resources. Water shapes travel without preventing land armies from reaching the other bank, so ships are not required simply to move between areas.

Use exploration to find value

Zen settlements are available; Wokou Horsemen and Wokou Monks are the named outlaws. Explore river branches with the Explorer before moving the main army into unfamiliar ground. Treasures and livestock can reward scouting, while a small force in a river corridor may be vulnerable. Keep a retreat route and check which crossings the opponent can use.
