Role, availability & values

The group uses 27 population and takes 60 seconds under the recorded rules. Legionarios form the main infantry component, while the Culverins can threaten enemy artillery and other targets. Reserve population for the entire group and protect the guns from cavalry or fast melee units while the infantry advances.

Training & availability

Indian or Japanese Consulate Banner Army; Industrial Age; select Portuguese Allies; 1,600 Export; 60 seconds; 27 population; 15 Legionarios and 3 Consulate Culverins in Definitive Edition.

Matchup & timing

Choose the force when the army needs both infantry and artillery counters and can wait for the delivery. Keep the Culverins protected, make room for the population before starting and use the Legionarios to control the approach. If enemy pressure is immediate, compare its arrival time with smaller or faster Consulate options.

A combined formation with a large population footprint

The Portuguese Expeditionary Army arrives as a single Consulate package, so its value depends on needing both its infantry and three Culverins. The artillery gives the group a way to answer enemy guns or pressure positions, but it should not lead the march unprotected. Screen it with the Legionarios and scout before taking the formation through a narrow approach. At 27 population, choosing the shipment may require disbanding or delaying another part of the army; include that cost in the timing decision.

Current force and earlier version

The Industrial Age company is available to Indians and Japanese who select Portuguese Allies at the Consulate. It costs 1,600 Export, takes 60 seconds and uses 27 population. The Definitive Edition group contains 15 Legionarios and three Consulate Culverins; The Asian Dynasties version had 13 Guerreiros and three Culverins.

Large infantry screen for Culverins

Fifteen Legionarios provide a sizeable screen for the three Culverins, which can answer enemy artillery and threaten structures. Keep the guns behind the infantry and reserve population for the full formation. This package is most useful when the army needs both a broad frontline and several artillery counters; it is costly if only one of those roles is needed.
