Slow Motion Routines

Slow Motion Routines is an Industrial Age Chinese Monastery technology that increases the Shaolin Master’s hand attack Critical Strike chance by 100%. It costs 500 Wood and 500 Coin and takes 15 seconds to research. The recorded effect applies to the hand attack’s chance to trigger a Critical Strike; it does not increase every attack type or change the Critical Strike damage itself unless another rule says so.

Effect & research conditions

Research it at the Monastery before using Shaolin Masters in sustained combat. The bonus affects the hand attack, so the unit must be in a position to use that attack. Protect the Masters while they close to melee range and avoid interpreting the chance increase as a blanket damage multiplier for all of their attacks.

Research condition

Chinese; Industrial Age; researched at the Monastery; costs 500 Wood and 500 Coin; 15-second research time; Shaolin Master hand attack Critical Strike chance +100%.

When to research

Choose the upgrade when Shaolin Masters are an important part of the Chinese army and will have opportunities to attack at close range. If they are absent or expected to fight at a distance, the immediate benefit is limited. Compare the 500 Wood and 500 Coin cost with other Industrial Age options.

Critical Strike chance reaches 40 percent

The Shaolin Master’s listed base Critical Strike chance is 20%; Slow Motion Routines increases that chance by 100%, bringing it to 40%. This raises how often the hand attack triggers the Critical Strike, rather than doubling the attack’s damage after it has triggered. The technology applies to the hand attack, so Shaolin Masters need to reach melee range and remain able to attack. Do not treat it as a ranged bonus or a general improvement for the Chinese army. The higher chance rewards sustained contact, but it does not remove the need to protect the Masters on their approach.

Choose the melee upgrade when Masters will engage

Slow Motion Routines is an Industrial Age Chinese Monastery technology that costs 500 Wood and 500 Coin and takes 15 seconds to research. The resource commitment is worthwhile when Shaolin Masters form a substantial part of the force and are expected to use their hand attack. If the Masters are held back, absent or unable to close safely, the increased Critical Strike chance has little immediate effect. Research before committing them and coordinate with a screen that can keep enemy units from surrounding the group. Its effect concerns Critical Strike frequency, not the damage multiplier of the strike.
