Effect & research conditions

Research costs 200 Food and 200 Coin and takes 30 seconds. The warship bonus replaces the ordinary 5% effect for that class; it is not 5% plus another 10%. The effect is a survivability improvement rather than an attack or speed upgrade. Access requires the House of Vasa palace settlement and the connected Trading Post or Tambo.

Research condition

Available from the Exploration Age. Research it at Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Vasa palace.

When to research

Research before a sustained battle when the army contains enough units for a 5% durability gain to matter, or when a naval force can use the 10% warship bonus. The value rises with continued exposure to damage; it offers less when units are rarely in combat. Protect the site while researching and weigh the cost against direct reinforcements.

Different values for land and naval units

Most units receive +5% hit points, while warships receive +10% instead. This can make Tar Kilns more attractive on a water map with ships expected to fight, but it remains a defensive bonus. It does not increase ship attack, range or movement, and a fleet still needs scouting and positioning to avoid concentrated enemy fire.

Reach the correct Minor Civilization site

Tar Kilns requires a Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Vasa palace. A player may have Trading Posts elsewhere without access to this technology. Locate the palace, secure its settlement and compare the bonus with the time and resources spent before beginning a research that takes 30 seconds.
