The Five Precepts
The Five Precepts is a Commerce Age Chinese Monastery technology that increases Disciple hit points and damage by 20%. It costs 200 Food and 200 Coin and takes 15 seconds to research. The effect is specific to Disciples, improving their durability and attack without changing the statistics of other Chinese units. The benefit matters only when Disciples are available and form part of the force.

Effect & research conditions
Research at the Monastery before using Disciples in an engagement. The added hit points help the affected units survive longer, while the damage increase improves their attacks. Use the Disciples according to their own role and keep them away from counters that can exploit their class; this technology does not change their movement or production access.

When to research
Choose The Five Precepts when Disciples are part of the Chinese plan and the resources can be spared from immediate production. If no Disciples are fielded, there is no current unit to benefit. The short research time makes it possible to time the upgrade shortly before a planned fight.
Effect on a Disciple’s listed profile
A Disciple’s listed base profile is 80 hit points and 10 hand-attack damage. A 20% increase corresponds to 96 hit points and 12 damage for those values, before other applicable modifiers. The upgrade therefore improves both the time a Disciple can remain in a fight and its ordinary hand attack; it does not raise the Disciple’s speed, add population space, or improve another Chinese unit. The value is concentrated in the Disciple line, so confirm that the Shaolin Master can train and support the group before committing Food and Coin at the Monastery.
