Citadels strengthens Persian Castles, making them more durable against bonus damage and more threatening to nearby units. Use it to reinforce an important Castle network rather than expecting static defenses to stop every siege push.
Plan and execution
Research Citadels when Persian Castles protect a valuable economy, a crossing, or a forward siege position. Place Castles to overlap their fire and cover likely approaches, then garrison ranged units or infantry as appropriate while a mobile force intercepts siege. Use the improved defenses to hold time for the army to regroup or to keep a forward production site alive.
Risks and adaptation
Trebuchets can still attack from beyond Castle range, and enemy siege will punish an unprotected structure. Do not invest if the opponent can simply change lanes; keep vision and a response army outside the Castle’s firing radius.
