Overview

Use Spearmen to protect Villagers and ranged troops from cavalry, not to chase mounted units across the map.

Plan and execution

Scout for a Stable or early Scouts, then station enough Spearmen between cavalry paths and vulnerable workers. Keep them near Archers that need a screen.

Risks and adaptation

Spearmen are slow and vulnerable to ranged units. Adjust production if the opponent changes composition. Place the screen where it protects a route or ranged group, and use walls or vision to reduce cavalry approaches. If enemy Archers arrive, add a ranged answer rather than asking Spearmen to hold the position alone.

Decision example

Spearmen can defend against Scouts and protect a vulnerable resource while the economy sets up Archers or another follow-up. Train enough to cover the threatened approach, not so many that food and wood for the next step disappear. Keep them near workers or a ranged group rather than chasing cavalry that can simply ride away. If the opponent shows Archers instead, change production and use the surviving Spearmen as a screen or vision unit.
