Role & counters

Architects are trained at the Town Center for Coin and occupy two population each. Italy can have a limited number, with the limit increasing as the civilization advances in Age; they do not gather Food or Coin like a standard Settler.

When to field it

Use Architects for buildings whose Wood cost would otherwise delay military production or an Age advance. Keep them safe, and remember that their construction capacity is limited by the available Architects and build time.

Italian free construction specialist

Architect is an Italian economic unit introduced in Knights of the Mediterranean. It costs 170 Coin, takes 34 seconds to train at the Town Center and uses two population. The profile lists 225 hit points, 10% ranged resistance, speed 4.0 and line of sight 14. Architects gather Wood and construct buildings for free, but do not gather Food or Coin like ordinary Settlers. Their free construction makes them valuable for placing Houses, production buildings or forward structures without spending the building’s normal Wood cost. The limitation is that Architects are expensive in Coin, consume two population and are limited in number, with the limit increasing as Italy advances in Age. Use them on buildings whose Wood cost would otherwise delay military production or an age-up, and keep them safe while constructing. They still need time to build; free cost does not mean instantaneous completion. Assign ordinary Settlers to Food and Coin while Architects handle construction, and plan the limited roster across the match. A lost Architect is a significant setback because replacing it requires Coin and training time. Check the Italian age and remaining Architect capacity before relying on another building placement.

Limited Architects

Architects are limited in number and consume two population each. Use them for construction with high Wood value, while ordinary Settlers gather Food and Coin. Replace a lost Architect only when Coin and population allow.

Construction capacity

Architects build without spending the usual Wood but remain limited in number and require Coin and two population. Use them for costly buildings and keep them protected during construction.

Wood savings

A free building still takes construction time and an Architect slot. Use the unit where the Wood cost is valuable, while keeping ordinary Settlers on Food and Coin.

Coin and population planning

Each Architect costs 170 Coin and uses two population. Build with them when Wood savings justify that cost, and reserve population for the rest of the Italian army.

Italian building pace

Free construction removes the normal Wood bill but not the time needed to finish a structure. Keep the Architect safe and use a Settler escort when building near the front. The Italian Basilica can improve construction speed for Architects, so consider whether the building is active before planning the total construction time. Architects are limited by Age and population, which means a Town Center queue should be planned rather than filled indiscriminately. Their main benefit is saving Wood for military production or expansion; they do not gather Food or Coin, so ordinary Settlers remain necessary to support the economy.

Use as construction specialists

An Architect is most efficient on buildings with significant Wood costs, while Settlers keep Food and Coin income flowing. Protect it during the build and avoid spending its two population on a low-value structure.

Italian free construction and Coin cost

The Architect is an Italian economic specialist introduced in Knights of the Mediterranean for Definitive Edition. It gathers Wood and constructs buildings without paying their normal Wood cost, allowing Italy to reserve gathered resources for units or Age advances. Architects are trained at the Town Center for 170 Coin, take 34 seconds and use two population. They do not gather Food or Coin as a Settler does, so each one trades ordinary economic flexibility for cheaper infrastructure. Use the Architect when building costs would otherwise delay production or a key timing.

Age-based limit and build-time tradeoff

Italy has a limited number of Architects, with the cap increasing as the civilization advances through the Ages. Their construction still takes time and the workers can be exposed, so free building resources do not make a forward placement safe or instantaneous. Keep them near protected ground and assign them to buildings that support the plan, such as production or economy, rather than scattering them across the map. Their two-population cost competes with military units, and training another Architect consumes Coin that may be needed for cavalry or research. Balance the resource saving against the workers’ time, population and limited count.
