Arctic Island

Arctic Island is a cold-weather map with one diagonal Trade Route running from the southwest toward the northeast. It appeared in the original game as Arctic Territories; Definitive Edition uses the name Arctic Island. The route gives both players a shared trade objective, while starting positions determine how safely each side can reach its Trading Posts.

Map character

Trace the route during the opening scout and note which sites are close to each base, where approaches narrow and how long reinforcements will take to arrive. Check nearby Hunts and Coin sources before committing Settlers to a distant post. Preserve a safe path back to the Town Center, especially if the army must cross open ground to defend a Trading Post.

What to scout

A Trading Post can support map control and trade income, but a remote site is costly to defend if the main force is elsewhere. Secure the section your army can reach first, then contest farther posts when the economy and reinforcement route are protected. The map’s cold theme does not reveal resource placement; scout the generated layout.

Route control depends on travel time

The southwest-to-northeast route creates a long axis across the map. Before claiming a post, compare how many units are needed to hold it with the time required to return to the base. A post near the army’s normal path can be more valuable than a distant one that divides the force. Use early scouting to decide which section can be reinforced consistently.
