Bolt-Action Rifles

Bolt-Action Rifles is a Revolution technology available to Prussia and the German Confederation, researched at the Factory. It reduces the Coin cost of Giant Grenadiers and Skirmishers by 20%. The research costs 450 Wood and 250 Coin and takes 40 seconds. The effect is limited to the listed units and resource component; it does not lower their Food cost or change their combat statistics.

Effect & research conditions

Research it at the Factory before producing a sustained force of Giant Grenadiers or Skirmishers. The Coin discount applies to later unit purchases, so it is more useful when enough production remains to recover the cost of the technology. Maintain access to the other resources and production buildings required for the units.

Research condition

Prussia or German Confederation; Revolution; researched at the Factory; costs 450 Wood and 250 Coin; 40-second research time; Giant Grenadier and Skirmisher Coin costs -20%.

When to research

Choose Bolt-Action Rifles when the Revolution roster depends on the listed unit lines and Coin is the limiting resource. If only a few units will be produced, the 40-second research may not repay its own cost. Plan around the revolutionary transition and keep Wood available for the Factory research.

Coin savings and break-even point

The listed Giant Grenadier costs 250 Coin, so a 20% Coin discount saves 50 Coin per unit. The listed Skirmisher costs 65 Coin, so the same discount saves 13 Coin per unit. Measured against the technology’s 250-Coin research cost, that is five Giant Grenadiers or twenty Skirmishers to recover the Coin portion. This is only a Coin calculation: the research also costs 450 Wood, takes 40 seconds, and does not reduce either unit’s Food cost or population use. Compare the expected production after researching with the resources and time that the Factory investment ties up.
