When to research
Research when many Villagers will keep gathering Wood through the Imperial Age and enough forest remains to use the bonus. The high Food and Coin cost competes with Imperial military production. If the workforce is small, trees are depleted or the army needs a timing attack, postpone it rather than paying for a short gathering window.
Civilization-specific research access
Europeans and Mexicans research Deforestation at the Capitol. Native Americans use a Market and must first complete Forest Spirit Ceremony. The Maya use a Town Center. The 50% Wood bonus is the same, but the building and prerequisite differ by civilization.
A late investment for a sustained Wood economy
The upgrade costs 1,000 Food and 1,000 Coin and takes 30 seconds. It increases the rate at which Villagers gather from trees and Mango Groves; it does not increase the amount remaining in each source. Research only when a large workforce can continue logging and the match has enough time for the higher rate to pay back.
