Function & construction
The Grand Master or a Depot Wagon can construct it. The building has a limited footprint and build limit; its combat value comes from its nearby effect rather than its own attack or unit queue.
Placement & timing
Place Depots near the units and defensive buildings expected to fight together, while keeping them within a defensible area. Add them as the Maltese force expands, not so far forward that the investment is easily lost.
Aura, detonation and friendly-fire risk
The Maltese Depot is available in the Commerce Age and costs 60 Wood and 60 Coin in the current listed version. Its aura increases the rate of fire of friendly Gunpowder Units, Artillery and Buildings within a radius of 16 by 10%. It also contains gunpowder: when destroyed it explodes, damaging nearby units and buildings on both teams, and the player can activate Detonate manually. The blast deals 110 siege damage in a radius of 14 after a five-second delay. This can punish enemies who approach too closely, but a badly placed Depot can damage the Maltese army or structures when it is destroyed. Place it behind the front line near the units that can use its attack-speed aura, and avoid stacking vulnerable forces around it when enemy siege is nearby. Treaty rules prevent construction until the Treaty counter ends.
Maltese resource enclosure interaction
Since update 13.58326, the Depot is also classified as a Resource Enclosure. The Commerce Age cost changed from 50 Wood and 50 Coin to 60 of each in update 14.43676, and the current construction time is 24 seconds. Those changes explain why older build orders may describe a cheaper, faster Depot. Use current Definitive Edition figures when planning a Maltese support position, and leave enough space for its blast radius so the building’s destruction does not injure nearby friendly troops.
