The group uses 30 population and takes 60 seconds under the recorded rules. Gendarmes can pressure targets at close range, while Horse Artillery provides ranged support and siege. Both elements need coordination: cavalry can move ahead faster than the guns can safely follow.

Training & availability

Chinese or Indian Consulate Banner Army; Industrial Age; select French Allies; 1,600 Export; 60 seconds; 30 population; 6 Gendarmes and 2 Consulate Horse Artillery in Definitive Edition.

Matchup & timing

Use it when the army needs a mobile mixed force and can afford its substantial population cost. Keep the artillery covered as the Gendarmes move to engage, and avoid splitting the formation across different routes. Consider whether the opponent’s anti-cavalry and artillery counters make another Consulate force preferable.

Keep the artillery with its cavalry screen

This Industrial Age Consulate force costs 30 population and takes 60 seconds to assemble. Six Gendarmes can pressure targets at close range while two Consulate Horse Artillery provide ranged support and siege. Do not let the cavalry outrun the guns; keep the Gendarmes screening the slower artillery and choose a target the combined force can reach safely.

Version and formation

Chinese or Indian players can select French Allies at the Consulate in the Industrial Age. The army costs 1,600 Export, takes 60 seconds and uses 30 population. The current Definitive Edition group has six Gendarmes and two Consulate Horse Artillery; The Asian Dynasties version had five Gendarmes. Use the current six-unit count when planning a live Definitive Edition match.

Cavalry and mobile artillery

Gendarmes provide heavy cavalry while Horse Artillery supplies mobile ranged and siege support. The combination is useful to India in particular because the source strategy notes its lack of a standard artillery unit; the two components also pressure massed Infantry. Keep the artillery out of reach of anti-cavalry troops and use the Gendarmes to protect its flanks.
