Heated Shot

Heated Shot is an Arsenal-era defense against naval forces. It improves artillery bombard attacks and building attacks that target ships, making it relevant when a fleet threatens a coastline or a naval route must be held. The bonus is specific to attacks against ships and should not be read as a general damage upgrade.

Effect

Research takes 30 seconds and costs 150 Food and 150 Wood. The recorded effect is 50% more bonus damage against ships for artillery bombard attacks and building anti-ship attacks. Access is listed at the Arsenal for Africans, Europeans, Federal Americans and Japanese, and at the Haudenosaunee Longhouse.

Research condition

Available in the Commerce Age at Arsenal (Africans, Europeans, Federal Americans, Japanese) , Longhouse (Haudenosaunee). Research time: 30 seconds. Cost: 150 food, 150 wood. Civilization-specific building access can vary.

Research decision

Research it when an opponent’s ships are likely to attack your shore or when your artillery and anti-ship defenses need to punish a fleet. It has little value in a land-only fight, so check the map and enemy naval investment before committing resources.

The bonus applies to anti-ship attacks

Heated Shot increases by 50% the bonus damage against ships for artillery bombard attacks and building attacks that target ships. It is not a general artillery damage upgrade against land units. The Commerce Age research takes 30 seconds and costs 150 Food and 150 Wood. Access is listed at the Arsenal for Africans, Europeans, Federal Americans and Japanese, and at the Longhouse for Haudenosaunee. The building access therefore depends on civilization even though the technology's role is consistently naval defense.

Research when the coast is threatened

Heated Shot matters when enemy ships can attack a shore, blockade a route or threaten a naval objective covered by artillery or anti-ship building attacks. It has little immediate value in a land-only engagement, so check whether the opponent is investing in ships before spending. The upgrade does not itself create a fleet or protect the firing structure; position artillery where it can reach the water and keep it screened from land troops that could silence the defense.
