Musk Ox

Musk Ox is a huntable wildlife resource found in herds on the Yukon map in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. Each animal carries 500 Food. It is a map resource rather than a unit that a civilization trains, and its slow movement and large sight radius distinguish it from ordinary military units.

Yukon wildlife and Food

The Musk Ox has 30 hit points, speed 2.0 and line of sight 18; its profile supports up to eight gatherers. Villagers can hunt it for a 500-Food carcass. While alive, it can also be tasked to economic buildings: at a Shrine it generates 0.076 resource per second (4.56 per minute) for the selected resource; at a Hacienda the recorded rates are 0.166667 Food/sec (10.00002/min), 0.25 Wood/sec (15/min) or 0.113334 Coin/sec (6.80004/min). These assigned-animal trickles are separate from the one-time Food gathered after hunting.

Recorded animal values

Locate the herd before assigning workers, then consider how long it can support Food gathering at up to eight gatherers. Since Musk Ox appear only on Yukon and each animal is finite, include the herd in the map’s resource plan and prepare another Food source before it is exhausted. The low speed and high Food value make it wildlife to hunt, not a unit for scouting or combat.

A finite map resource

A Musk Ox herd provides Food only while animals remain to be hunted. The recorded gatherer capacity is eight, so assigning more workers does not raise the profile’s listed maximum. Scout the local area and plan the next available Food source before the herd is depleted; the animal does not replenish itself through a building or technology.

Distinguishing it from Bison

The source lists Bison and Musk Ox with the same 30 hit points and 500 Food, while identifying Musk Ox as Yukon wildlife. Use the proper map entry when planning a match: this does not make Musk Ox a civilization-specific unit or imply that it appears on every map.

Hunting and assigned-animal income are different uses

Hunting converts the Musk Ox into a finite 500-Food carcass. If left alive and tasked to a Shrine, its recorded rate is 0.076 of the Shrine’s selected resource each second, or 4.56 per minute. A Hacienda assignment has separate selectable rates: 0.166667 Food/sec (10.00002 per minute), 0.25 Wood/sec (15 per minute) or 0.113334 Coin/sec (6.80004 per minute). These rates describe the animal assigned to an operating building, not the Villagers gathering its hunted carcass. Compare the ongoing building trickle with the one-time hunt before deciding how to use a nearby herd.
