When to research

Research when the next army will include several Native warriors, Outlaws or Mercenaries; the 10% cost and training reductions can affect both the purchase and its timing. The 250 Food and 250 Wood investment is less useful if only a few such units remain to be trained. Inca players may use a Tambo, while the listed general access is through a Trading Post.

Lower costs for allied troops

Philhellenism is an Industrial Age technology researched at a Trading Post or, for the Inca, a Tambo. It costs 250 Food and 250 Wood and takes 30 seconds. It reduces the cost and training time of Native Warriors, Outlaws and Mercenaries by 10%.

Use the discount across repeated production

The effect benefits repeated training of the named groups, so its return depends on how many such units the army will recruit. It does not discount ordinary military units outside those categories. Research when the relevant settlement or production route is secure and the army can use the saved time and resources.
